“ Looking at my photos , it ’s easygoing to imagine being an incredibly small creature living on the open of the basketball , ” Jeff toldBored Panda . “ From the perspective of that bantam beast , the ‘ horizon ’ of the basketball would always look ‘ flat . ’ ”
In the photos , Jeff used a macro lens to get an radical - close - up view of the basketball . In his Emily Post on imgur , he said he “ tediously positioned the camera ” on a tripod to get the “ view ” of the hoops into view .
He then took a routine of image with a manual focus , before combining them in stacking software to farm a final image . And from that image , well , the basketball sure does count flat , does n’t it ?
The breadth of the basketball ’s open in one of the images was just 4.2 millimeter widely . Jeff then zoomed in even further to provide “ proof that a basketball is matte ” , with a final double 2.75 millimeters widely .
“ The bollock is an ‘ prescribed size ’ hoops from a company called ‘ Baden ’ . Their site list their " official size " balls as 29.5 [ in ] circumference ( 749.3 mm ) , ” he wrote .
“ The circuit of Earth is about 40,075 km [ 24,900 mile ] . So this " horizon " of the basketball game is tantamount to the amount of curve you would see while looking at 147 km ( 91 mi ) worth of Earth ’s horizon . ”
Up near , even a basketball can be made to search flat . Unless you believe the “ flat hoops ” theory that suggests this ball was always flat . Maybe we take someone to zoom in on a lawn tennis ball for further proof ?
