There are presently three basic types of pee filtration processes : membrane filtration , like the eccentric in your water pitcher ; electrodialysis ; and capacitive deionization . So a radical of chemical engineers from the U.S. and Germany teamed up to make something good . Their resolution is astonishingly simple : a curing of electrically charge dipstick that can target pesticides , chemical thriftlessness , and even prescription drug .

Each dipstick is an electrode coated with what are called Faradaic materials . The coatings can be process to make them either positively or negatively charge up , and to resonate with — and thus zap — specific speck .

To examine the dipsticks , the research worker immerse them in water contaminated with very low doses of ibuprofen and unlike types of pesticide . The apparatus shape beautifully , targeting and eliminating pollutant molecules even at levels as humiliated as a few parts per million .

The new engineering is also improbably vigour effective , requiring so little energy that it could easily be powered by solar panels in remote areas with no other access to electricity .
