Thelargest ever census of debris in the local Universehas been carried out by the European Space Agency ’s Herschel space observatory — and the results are vast and beautiful .
rubble might not go extremely aphrodisiacal , but the midget grains are fundamental in the creation of stars and planet , and lend galaxies that awful ghostly appearing that we ’re all intimate with . Thelatest catalogof cosmic junk include images of 323 different galaxies , all imaged by Herschel ’s instruments across far - infrared and submillimetre wavelength .
The image above — click enlarge to embiggen — is a montage of just some of datum , format to show dust - rich galaxies in the top left down to dust - poor I in the bottom right . Those with lots of dust tend to be helical or unorthodox , while the dust - pitiful are usually ovate ; blue and blood-red colours comprise coolheaded and warmer neighborhood of junk , severally .

As well as looking pretty , the datum will be used alongside outcome from the primer based Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile to avail map debris across the entire observable Universe . [ ESA ]
