So two episodes in , Gotham continues to be madly watchable . It ’s as silly as a pair of substance pant , but it ’s still really fun , and you root for the conflicted , gape - mouthed James Gordon enough to go for that this is a city where all the outlaw speak campily right English ( from mobster Carmine Falcone to the Penguin to this episode ’s child - snatchers ) and the police call you in for a disciplinary meeting if you refuse to beat up a suspect . On a shell from Adam West to Christian Bale , this show is still hovering hazardously tightlipped to Val Kilmer district , but it ’s being extremely entertaining about it .
The big engine of the show , properly now , is James Gordon ’s scandalisation — which he clear zero enigma of , even while he still pretends he shot Oswald Cobblepot in the head in last week ’s pilot . How does Gordon feather this contradiction , of pretend to be a dirty cop while going around reprimand everybody else about how to be a good cop ? He does n’t , really . He just bluster past it .
credibly my favorite bit in last night ’s installment is the part where Gordon separate a pulsation pig who was too busybodied helping a eating place that pays protection money to shell out with a reinvigorated clay , “ You ’re not a tough guy . You ’re just a unfit cop . ” Gordon later on rub his eminent - and - mighty morality in the face of Captain Sarah Essen ( who ’s plain also dirty ) and then the Mayor of Gotham .
And in “ Selina Kyle , ” we get a mo more of a hint as to how the corruption in Gotham really work , with payoffs , people turning a blind eye to stuff , and opportunist politicians . In the episode ’s “ A ” plot , a pair of 1950s - nice child - snatcher ( working the same Leave it to Beaver schtick as the Mayor in Buffy season three ) snatch homeless children to hand over to someone named the Dollmaker . At first nobody cares , until Gordon ’s fiancée Barbara Kean leaks the story to the newspaper .
( Side note : you could say these people are barbarians because they run through mu - shu whatever without any flannel cake . Or hoisin sauce . Gotham City is in worse shape than we realized . )

Gordon and Bullock rescue the Thomas Kid — but the Mayor uses the public outcry as a means to round up stateless children and post most of them to a puerile facility upstate . ( Who ’s pay for that ? severely to say . ) But the two baby - snatchers highjack one of the bus and steal 30 kid , including the future Catwoman , and it ’s up to Gordon to save them .
You have to bonk the Mayor using public concern about homeless kids as an alibi to send tons of kid to jail — that ’s a nicely sardonic twist , and the kind of thing this show definitely needs more of .
At the end of the installment , Selina Kyle aka Cat is still in peril of being sent upstate — so she makes a peck with James Gordon . If he save up her from juvie , she ’ll narrate him what she knows about the slaying of the Waynes , which she see . ( I was half expecting this show to hold back a dozen episodes before Selina come forward , so it ’s probably a good affair that brake shoe dropped sooner . )
Meanwhile , the episode has about 20 subplots . Including the one glimpsed above in the clip featuring young Bruce Wayne . He ’s burning and cutting himself , to test his limits , and pull weird horseshit from his nightmare . His protector , Alfred Pennyworth , feels somewhat lost — especially since Thomas Wayne stipulate no shrink for his son , in the event of Thomas and Martha ’s grisly murder . ( I desire to get word how that conversation went . “ Now Alfred , just so you know , if Martha and I happen to be gun down at some point , I want you to promise that Bruce will be raised without psychotherapy , and allowed to do whatever he wants , within understanding . ” )
So Alfred arranges for Bruce to have Camellia sinensis with James Gordon , who severalise Bruce that you ca n’t buy honey or strong maternal figures for homeless kids . ( So just let them persist stateless , I opine ? ) James Gordon is not a public policy expert , allow ’s just say that .

( In a show full of multitude who seek to institute a measure of naturalism to their somewhat cartoonish situations , Jada Pinkett - Smith seems the most uncoerced to vamp and go over the top , milking every over - spectacular line of dialogue for maximum over - dramatic event . ) In any display case , Carmine has Fish Mooney ’s lover beaten up , and Fish has to pretend that she does n’t heed — until Carmine is gone and then she screams for everyone to get out .

As for Oswald , he gets out of Gotham City , and actually gets picked up by some jerky college kid . One of whom makes the error of say Oswald walks like a penguin . So Oswald slaughters him , and then issues a ransom requirement for the other one — which does n’t reverse out that well , because nobody takes Oswald in earnest yet . And Allen and Montoya , the Only Honest Cops In Gotham Besides Gordon , visit Oswald ’s female parent , who seems kind of out to lunch .
