We sincerely apologize for doing this but you ’re about to palpate old . Today , March 22 , isthe thirtieth day of remembrance of the releaseof Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 : The Secret of the Ooze . That means the flick you in all probability love as a child is officiallystarting to find grey hair , gain ground free weight in new places , and consider a Friday night at home more appealing than perish out .
earnestly though , when I intend of the1990s , one of the first thing I think about is The Secret of the Ooze . Moreso than its forerunner , the second Turtles movie is quintessential‘90s entertainment , complete with Vanilla Ice cameo and Sung , chirpy upbeat scotch , as well as Joan Rivers and Ralph Naderjokes . To me , and I take over many of you , it ’s a film we watched a short ton growing up and one that hold a nostalgic position in our hearts . But have you watched it recently ? Does it support up ?

I ’m well-chosen to report that yes….yes , it does .
unfreeze March 22 , 1991 , directed by Michael Pressman and write by Todd W. Langen , Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 : The Secret of the Ooze brings back Leonardo , Donatello , Raphael , and Michaelangelo from the first movie ( and do n’t forget theanimated series , toy dog credit line , and mirthful book ! ) and fundamentally pick up where the original left off . Instantly , you ’re send back into the world with lots of energetic action and quippy joke . Even now , jokes like “ combat cold cut ” as Michaelangelo swing some sausages still make me laugh .
Beyond that , the main story is really very wide-eyed and verbatim . The Turtles and their schoolmaster , Splinter , ultimately get wind of the society that create the ooze that created them . As they investigate deeply into their own descent , the vicious Shredder reemerges and hopes to use the sludge for his gain . He creates two new variation , Bebop and Rocksteady Tokka and Rahzar , to fight the Turtles and almost succeed . With that , The Secret of the Ooze won me over again because it ’s so direct and bare . Look , I love Marvel movies , DC movies , Star Wars , all of that , but most of the big , family sci - fi fantasy movie these days are overly complicated — The Secret of the Ooze is n’t . Toxic waste product creates mutation , and that ’s it . No penury to go any profoundly .

The downside to a simple social structure is the film also adjoin on a few cool character details you bid would have been explore profoundly . Like when the Turtles realize their foundation from the ooze was basically a mistake . Donatello ponders the meaning of his cosmos for a few second but it does n’t go beyond that . There ’s also this notion of them as growing boys who are attracted to the outside world that shuns them . It ’s mentioned , but not fully explored .
thing like that may have given The Secret of the Ooze a bit more depth , but honestly , you are n’t watch a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie for the depth . You desire prank , you want activity , you want spectacle . And , for its clock time , The Secret of the Ooze delivers . see the main ace are actors in luxuriant costume , it ’s still telling to see such distinct personality pull off so much martial arts stage dancing . No , these are n’t the most elaborate or exciting fight you ’ll ever see , but it ’s dudes in turtle costumes , so it wreak . Plus , they ’re crack so many football game and pizza pie joke as it ’s happening , you barely discover .
There are certain things you do notice with a 30 - year lense though . Like the fact that Ernie Reyes Jr. ’s character Kino is severely underwritten and playact mainly as a plot gadget . It ’s also weird to see that fellow member of Shredder ’s Foot Clan are almost all white men . The amount of women in the movie at all feels like a pretty big supervision : therecasted April O’Neil(The 100 ’s Paige Turco)—who does far less this time around — and a abbreviated cameo from Curb Your Enthusiasm ’s Susie Essman early in the film are pretty much all we get .

Overall though , watching The Secret of the Ooze 30 old age after its spillage was a joyous occasion . That the film is still as exciting and fishy as I remember speaks volumes about the passion everyone involved put into it . Which is fitting since , before the film even begins , there ’s a dedication to Jim Henson , whose caller worked on the costumes for the film and died soon before its release . It ’s a moving picture worthy of Henson and absolutely link to a clock time and place where Vanilla Ice could spontaneously bust out a diegetic rapsong about Ninja Turtles , who then break out into a choreographed dance number . If that ’s not entertainment , I do n’t know what is .
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 : The Secret of the Ooze is now streaming on HBO Max .
