Life in the Googleplex has a fairy fib allure : gourmet food ! Ski trip ! Giant dessert statuespopping up out of nowhereevery six months ! And if exploit for the society seems like some alternaworld fantasy dreamscape , well , it kind of is . Just not , it turns out , for everyone .

Google drone work under a caste organization : employee wear different colored badge to signal their status . That ’s not new or surprising , and does n’t really mean much , other than that you could spot a Google interne ( literally ) a half a mile off . They ’re the ones in unripe . White badges are full - timers , and carmine badges — count in the thousands — are contractors . And then , asAndrew Norman Wilson found , when work as a Google declarer from 2007 - 2008 , there are the yellow badge . A class of employee that live for the most part asunder from the rest of the Google hive , impound to building 3.1459~ , deny the benefits that intimately everyone else share in .
Wilson ’s video - cum - art installation “ Workers Leaving the Googleplex ” demonstrate the comings and goings of this fourth class , a group that ’s apparently denied access to the companionship ’s outsized privileges . Their jobs ? To glance over books , page by page , for Google Book Search . lowly , repetitious contract bridge project , sure , but certainly not any less so than that performed by the reddened - badged custodians and kitchen faculty . So why are they cordoned off ? Wilson decided to find out :
I was outside the Google Book Search building , which is adjacent to the building I work in , and had the fortune to talk to a few employees while they were leaving workplace . Most of them are multitude of color and are supposedly involved in the labor of digitise selective information . I ’m interested in issue of class , race , and Labour Party , and so out of general curiosity I wanted to postulate these worker about their jobs .
His attempts to interview , film , and discover were stymied early on ; Google security cease him , and reportedly the troupe hale his bosses to terminate his employment . Which , soon after the incident , they did .
You ’ll notice that Wilson tilts his lance falteringly at race and class as the inherent reason why the yellow badges do n’t get to join in Google ’s reindeer games . That seems improbable , honestly , and it ’s backbreaking to experience too bad for mass with honest jobs just because they do n’t get to ride a limo shuttle home . There are also other factors — the silence of the Google Books project , the lowly nature of the job itself — that I ’m sure weigh more heavily in the conclusion to silo these valet and women .
But there ’s a gravid head about Google itself here , about a society whose entire image is built on how it treats its workers — even the contract ones . After all , all reduce employee are carry to adhere to Google’sCode of Conduct . Which , by the way , makes it dead clear that everyone should share the same advantage :
We are committed to a supportive work environs , where employees have the opportunity to pass their full potential . Each Googler is expected to do his or her utmost to create a respectful workplace acculturation that is free of torment , intimidation , prejudice and unlawful discrimination of any kind .
And even though no one ’s entitled to the kinds of perks Google offers — the kind that most of us can only stargaze about — if you ’re cash in one’s chips to offer them at all it seems only right to do so universally . When you do n’t , you create an unreal class system , implicit in bias . That gnaw at Google ’s stated value . It cuts the worst variety of corners .
