So here ’s what that means : Last year , Google launched Hotel Finder and Flight Search , seemingly to contend withKayakorHotels.com . Both now appear conspicuously on Google ’s main hunt results page . At the clock time , it seemed like Google was just hunt roughshod over every manufacture , gather up precious data while it trample over the once - profitable fields sown by competitors that could n’t afford to mesh on the slender margins Google does .
Now , though , there ’s another layer : Google is collecting money from seller its search engines point user toward . The event seem to be the same as virginal “ constituent ” results , just now companies are paying Google for the referral . So if you grab a Delta flight through Google Flights , Delta will quetch back a portion of your just the ticket price to Google . all fair ! But it also goes against the Google ’s fundamental principle that search results should always be organic and guileless . Here ’s the disavowal / explainer that Google shows user flop now :
Which looks even bad when you line that up with Google ’s statements in its IPO filing in 2004 :

We do not assume money for search result ranking or comprehension . We do accept fee for advertising , but it does not influence how we get our search results . The advertizement is intelligibly marked and separated . This is exchangeable to a newspaper , where the articles are independent of the advertizing . …
We apply these principles to each of our product and service . We trust it is authoritative for users to have access code to the best available information and research , not just the data that someone pays for them to see .
Now that ’s changed , and of course , the EVIL fleur-de-lis are being run up the mast . Except that for a giant entity of Google ’s oscilloscope , this is inevitable and obvious clearly something that had to materialize , especially in the context of DUH . Yes , Google is going through some change — and that meansa real reevaluation of what and who it isas a company . And paid search positioning is a precious slender stemma to tread — properly now , there ’s no discernible impetus for company to continue paying , so this could quickly , conceivably turn into a pay - to - be - include scenario . But flop now , right here , this is just good line . In fact , it would almost be weirder if they did n’t .

Here ’s the thing : All of Google ’s verbatim competitor — Facebook and Twitter especially — have full paid inclusion that ’s at times far less transparent than Google ’s . It ’s just how business is done at this point . Google changing its creative thinker does n’t mean that it ’s a forerunner of destruction on the world . party change their mindsall the time . This is just Google act like the corporate monolith that it has been for some sentence now . [ Marketing Land ]
