Move over , Information Desk Person : If some Google employee have their way , we ’ll soon be getting a whole newfangled bent of emojis that present a wide range of careers for women .
According to the proposal [ PDF ] , which was submitted to the Unicode Consortium on Tuesday , “ Google wants to increase the representation of women in emoji ” by creating “ a new lot of emoji that stand for a wide range of profession for women and men with a finish of highlighting the diversity of cleaning lady ’s calling and invest little girl everywhere . ”
The proposal follows an outcry over the lack of emojis featuring professional women . Ladies who want to express themselves via emoji can opt from a neutral distaff emoji , a bride , a princess , a dancing dame in a red dress , or twins dressed as bunnies — a fact pointed out in#LikeAGirl , an ad campaign for Always . man are well represented : They can choose from Santa , or a tec , a constabulary police officer , a mental synthesis doer , or a figure of jock .
Niniane Wang , CEO ofEvertoonand a former Google employee , told Miclate last year that “ Every sidereal day we ’re seeing this pernicious content that there are these emojis of valet de chambre doing Job , but women are just dancing and perplex their hair rationalize . … [ Emojis have ] become part of our cultural speech . That ’s why I do n’t think it ’s silly . gobs of people pass with emojis , and texting is such a permeant part of how we communicate with each other . If we ’re all texting , and all using emojis , then does n’t it make gumption that they should represent us ? ”
Google employee Rachel Been , Nicole Bleuel , Agustin Fonts , and Mark Davis — who is also co - founding father and Chief Executive of the Unicode Consortium — have proposed13 new female emojis ( and their male counterparts ) , running the gamut from office actor and doc to scientists and software engineer to machinist and Farmer . “ We believe this will empower young women ( the heaviest emoji exploiter ) , and better shine the polar function women play in the world , ” the proposal read .
The goal is to put through these new emojis by the final stage of 2016 . “ The global women ’s par movement is growing , ” the proposal of marriage reads , “ so the time to create these emoji is now . ”
