Last week , astronomers at a Hawaiian lookout station fleck a spiral - like structure over Maunakea . A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage is the potential reservoir of the strange atmospheric feature , as this sort of affair has happened before .
The spiral was see during the other morning hr of January 18 , the same day that a Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida . Atweetfrom Subaru Telescope astronomers provided a glimpse of the spectacle , which the scientists connect to SpaceX ’s launching of a new planet .
The lookout station also provide a time lapsevideoof the spiral , show its development over time , along with an unsettling number of satellites zipping by . “ to begin with that day , SpaceX launched a satellite to average - globe orbit , ” Subaru Telescope order in the video recording . “ We believe this phenomenon is refer [ to ] its orbital deployment operation . ” SpaceX’sGPS III Space Vehicle 06mission did in fact launch earlier in the Clarence Day , delivering a GPS satellite for the U.S. Space Force .

TheSubaru Telescopeis a 26.9 - foot ( 8.2 - cadence ) optical - infrared scope located on the summit of Maunakea and operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan . The team used the facility ’s Subaru - Asahi Star Camera to distinguish and chronicle the spiral .
That a projectile could cause such an atmospherical formation seems surprising , but this is n’t the first time that a SpaceX rocket salad has caused such a construction to form ; a similar “ smoke annulus ” seen over Illinois on June 19 , 2022 was linked to the launching of a Falcon 9 and the delivery of the Globalstar FM15 artificial satellite .
“ This spiral was cause by the Falcon 9 ’s upper phase ventilate leftover fuel just before deorbiting into the Pacific Ocean , ” Spaceweatherreportedat the meter . “ The upper microscope stage was believably spinning on its longest axis of rotation to stabilise flight orientation — hence the spiral shape , ” and similar spirals “ have been seen after premature Falcon 9 launch . ”

Falcon 9 launches are hump for producing strange atmospherical effect , including bow shocks ( as seen in the new video ) and rocket “ man-of-war . ” Sights like this are set to be a common natural event , with SpaceX planning more than 100 Falcon 9 launches in the coming year .
