Last night ’s Game of Thrones had a plenty of scenes where people attempt to consolidate their great power . Some people make alliances , others bully their follower , and still others seek to broadcast their enemies on self-annihilation missions . When your handgrip on power is n’t dependable , you have to be crafty and ruthless as shtup . despoiler forrader …
Among other thing , last nighttime ’s episode included good onetime Margaery trying to succeed over her third royal husband in a row . Plus Daenerys render to show the people of her newly seize , I mean liberated , city that she ’s a ruthless dispenser of justice . And Ser Alliser Thorne trying to go from pretend Lord Commander of the Night ’s Watch to just unmistakable Lord Commander . And head mutineer Karl ( Burn Gorman ! ) reach indisputable the other scumbags screw he ’s the top scumbag .
As common , it ’s our philosopher - in - foreman , Petyr Baelish , aka Littlefinger , who explains how the globe work , in a speech to Sansa Stark : “ A world with no motive is a man no - one suspects . Always keep your foes confound . If they do n’t know who you are or what you require , they ca n’t know what you contrive to do next . ” And the converse is true — most of these characters have their motivating written on their sleeve , making them well-to-do to predict .

And just as importantly , fuck when to modify partner — the alignment with the Lannisters was practiced for Littlefinger for a while , but his new friends , the Tyrells , are more reliable . “ I do n’t require Friend like me , ” he tells Sansa .
And yes , it ’s now official who kill Joffrey : Littlefinger and Lady Olenna Tyrell . Littlefinger provide the poison — the “ Strangler ” — which was hidden inside the necklace which his federal agent Dontos gave to Sansa . Olenna catch a stone from Sansa ’s necklace and put the poison into Joffrey ’s cup . Because , as she explains to her granddaughter Margaery , she was n’t about to permit Margaery wed that freak .
Littlefinger is the last mortal anyone would suspect of vote down Joffrey , because he was n’t even there at the time — and now , he ’s taking Sansa to the Eyrie , the unprocurable batch fastness of Sansa ’s aunt , Lysa Arryn . ( That ’s her at left — she tried to kill Tyrion via trial by combat back in season one . ) Littlefinger is travel to marry Lysa , at which point he ’ll be lord of Harrenhal and also of the Eyrie . But Littlefinger ’s ambitions are right smart high , he distinguish Sansa : He wants “ everything . ”

So Littlefinger is probably the sneakiest character on this show , getting away with regicide , clinching a secret coalition , and consolidate his index unbeknownst to anyone . ( The Tyrells in all likelihood do n’t even know he foiled their plot of land to marry Loras to Sansa . ) He runs rings around pretty much everybody else , even a top - year schemer like Olenna — I ’m not indisputable he ’s completely pay up the Tyrells a compliment when he tell they ’re reliable .
And we see lots of examples of other people clamber to visualise out how to maintain their shaky holds on power , now that everything has change :
You might have thought nothing would ever shock Margaery , after King Renly and King Joffrey — but apparently , you ’d be wrong . She seems genuinely a moment disturbed to see that her sweet old gran put poison into her hubby ’s wedding goblet — and to realize that she has to make headway over yet another married man in a hurry , before Cersei turns Tommen against her .

You have to palpate for Margaery , who can only ever rule through her husband . She told Littlefinger back in time of year two that she wanted to be “ the Queen , ” not just “ a queen . ” ( Westerosfought a flaming civil warfare 169 old age earlierover whether a cleaning woman could ever sit on the Iron Throne . ) Margaery supported Renly ’s human relationship with her comrade Loras , and pandered a spot to Joffrey ’s ego — but youthful Tommen is a brand name new mystifier .
Olenna ( Diana Rigg , always wonderful ) tells Margaery a news report of how she won over Margaery ’s grandfather Luthor , who was supposed to propose to Olenna ’s sister , leave Olenna to marry some frightful Targaryen . So Olenna “ got lose ” coming back from an fancywork lesson and found herself in Luthor ’s chamber — quite by accident ! And she give Luthor a predilection of what he could anticipate if he tie her , instead .
“ I was good . I was very , very estimable , ” Olenna says . “ You are even respectable . But you postulate to act rapidly . ”

So Margaery follows her grandmother ’s example … sort of . She fail to see the next King in his chamber , against Cersei ’s orders , and basically just tries to bond with him . you’re able to see the strain in Margaery ’s look , and the kindness does n’t come as naturally as it did with Sansa , or those short orphans last class . But luckily , Tommen is manifestly a seraphic , simple small fry — who just care about his little cat , Ser Pounce , whom Joffrey was always threatening to slay .
Margaery proposes a friendship of sort with her intended hubby , and it ’ll be their little secret . But of course , Tommen seemed just as eager to do whatever his granddaddy Tywin wanted , last week . He ’s up for grabs … for now , at least .
This season ’s portrayal of Jaime ( including a certain tantrum , which feel even more complimentary after this instalment ) has been all about his feelings of powerlessness — which does n’t just come from his missing script , but from not knowing who he is . His beginner has disowned him , his nephew / Logos died in front of him , and his entry in the White Book of Kingsguard members is almost clean , except for his killing the Mad King . Nobody respect his authority as Lord Commander , maybe because that variety of authority comes from family relationship that Jaime does n’t have .

( Was the stuff about Jaime being the “ Kingslayer ” in the White Book before , when Joffrey was say from it a few episodes ago — or did Jaime just add it himself ? Robert Joffrey only razz Jaime that his entry is pretty short , and does n’t mention anything about killing the sick King . )
Jaime is tear between his loyalty to his blood brother Tyrion and his sister Cersei , now that Tyrion is charge of obliterate King Joffrey . So Jaime has been avoiding chew the fat Tyrion in prison , until Bronn tells him that Tyrion in the beginning wanted Jaime to be his wiz during the trial by combat at the Eyrie — because Tyrion knew Jaime would cod day and Nox to oppose for him .
When Jaime does visit Tyrion , he comes aside sealed that Tyrion is innocent — but he also feels even more powerless . Jaime ca n’t just break Tyrion out of prison house , because that would be treason . And no matter what happens , Tryion is probably screwed . specially if Cersei has anything to do with it . ( Best line of the episode ? Probably “ The Kingslayer Brothers . You like it ? I like it . ” )

Cersei , meanwhile , keeps strain to promote Jaime into a more conventional family relationship , that of Queen Regent and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard — a human relationship in which Jaime more or less serves Cersei . ( For now , at least . ) She hector him about the fact that only one Kingsguard member is hold Tommen , after what happened to Joffrey .
Cersei only offers Jaime one prospect to be something other than “ Lord Commander ” to her — if he hold out to come up Sansa Stark and get Cersei Sansa ’s head . This is n’t just to prove that Jaime is still truehearted ( and useful ) to Cersei , after everything that ’s happened — it ’s to prove that Jaime has no remaining dedication to Catelyn Stark , the dead woman to whom he swore an oath to return the Stark missy home safely .
Perversely , Cersei ’s needling convinces Jaime of the inverse : That he still does owe commitment to Cat Stark , even though she ’s dead and Arya credibly is as well . So he gives his invaluable Valyrian steel sword to Brienne , along with new armour and the good squire in Westeros ( Podrick ! ) and tasks Brienne with regain Sansa and getting her someplace dependable . Brienne accept the new sword and name it “ Oathkeeper . ”

And I think Jaime pack one dance step nearer to know who he is , by knowing where his loyalties lie . ( With Cat Stark , but also apparently with Tyrion . ) Cersei , meanwhile , tries to reassert herself with him , both based on her status and on her older rank … and fail .
The juxtaposition of the Cersei / Margaery scenes shows yet again how much better at all this point Margaery is — although you see also see some confidential information that Cersei is just Margaery 15 age from now .
Meanwhile , further North , we get two studies in terrible leadership , in the wake of the expiry of Jeor Mormont , former Lord Commander of the Night ’s Watch .

Ser Alliser Thorne is the acting Lord Commander — but his lieu is threatened by Jon Snow ’s popularity . Jon Snow is teaching the line-shooting how to struggle Wildlings more effectively , base on his recent experiences among them . Alliser ’s new good Quaker Janos Slynt reminds him that at some point , there ’ll be a “ choosing ” and the Night ’s Watch will beak a newfangled leader — and if Alliser is n’t more careful , he ’ll wind up taking orders from Jon Snow for the remainder of his life sentence .
So Ser Alliser tries to get free of Jon Snow , in a means that backfires awfully . He switch his decision and tolerate Jon to go up to Craster ’s Keep to kill Karl and the other traitors there ( so they wo n’t distinguish the Wildlings everything they know about Castle Black ’s defenses . ) But he wo n’t order any men to go with Jon Snow — it ’s an all - volunteer commission .
Ser Allister no doubt hop nobody will volunteer to go with Jon Snow beyond the Wall — but instead , after Jon Snow reminds everyone that these men killed Mormont , he gets a ton of volunteers . Which only cement Jon Snow ’s sentiency of leadership .

Of course , Jon Snow is n’t being entirely fair with everyone , because at this point he ’s already figured out that his half - brother Bran probably drop dead to Craster ’s Keep , that being the only decent shelter left northerly of the Wall . Also , Jon has left his direwolf Ghost there . ( All of this is so far deviate from the book , that it ’s hard to tell where any of this is going . )
Luckily , Jon ’s crew includes Locke , who ’s a ready to hand guy in a fight . Locke likes to take that he joined the Night ’s Watch to debar having his script cut off for steal — when in fact , Locke is the one who bring down off Jaime Lannister ’s hand . And Locke has been send by Roose Bolton to find Bran Stark ( and maybe also deal with Jon Snow , who ’s half a Stark ) . So Jon is playing into Locke ’s , er , hand .
Ser Alliser is a paragon of brilliant leaders and wiliness , compared to Karl , the drawing card of the mutineer at Craster ’s Keep . Karl ’s musical theme of maintaining his bureau is to keep shout out at people about how many people he belt down back home in Gin Alley and how many fucks he gives ( all of them , until you are stagnant . ) He does n’t call for anybody ’s regard , as long as they ’re terrified of him . And for some intellect , he insists on keeping Jon Snow ’s direwolf alert — as if it ’s a status symbolization . Like Jeor ’s skull , which he drinks out of .

But just like Alliser is the fresh Jeor and Margaery is the young Cersei , Karl is drive to become the new Craster — as symbolized by him make to dispose of one of Craster ’s boy in the customary fashion . He has to keep offering up fresh babies to the White Walkers , just as Craster did . ( More on that later . )
And when Bran hears the baby in the forest , he wargs into his direwolf Summer to look into — lead to Summer ’s capture , and then everyone else ’s . Bran breach under questioning jolly quickly , admitting who he is . And now Karl has more skilful fortune than he jazz what to do with . ( This show seems to go out of its way to demonstrate how have too much unforeseen dear luck can be just as uncollectible for you as uncollectible fate — Karl credibly does n’t have a great future ahead of him . )
Notably , this episode start and ends with babe snatched from their home base — to be raised without any retention of their birth family line .

We start with a long picture by the ardor , where Missandei is teaching Grey Worm the common tongue , presumably so he can speak for the Unsullied when they get to Westeros . That rick into Missandei and Grey Worm verbalize about their earliest memories — Missandei does n’t commend her place , but she does remember being adopt from it and watch it burn . For Grey Worm ’s part , there was nothing before he was Unsullied . His life began when he was taken from the Summer Isles .
When Missandei suggests that maybe some day he ’ll go back to the Summer Isles , to learn who he was before he was Unsullied , Grey Worm says something in Valyrian ( without subtitles ) and then : “ vote down the master . ”
That becomes the catchword of the Meereen uprising , and it ’s a product of not having any identity or childhood memories other than the one you were stolen away for . When you become citizenry into objects , their only other choice is to see themselves as weapon system .

The instalment ends with a baby taken from Craster ’s menage , to the sound of another slogan being chant : “ A gift for the gods . ” The baby end up being best up by a snowy walker , and this sentence we get to see where it goes — deep into the frigid barren , to a variety of monstrous bastion where pale figures suffer in a rotary . And then someone who count like the White Walker King picks up the baby and touches his face — and he reverse into a White Walker .
Freeing the great unwashed from an identity they ’ve had their whole living is a complicated business , and Daenerys is trying to be pernicious about liberating the slaves of Meereen . ( Emphasis on “ try . ” ) Last week , she told the Meereenese slaves that they had to free themselves , and this time around , she follow through , air Grey Worm in spite of appearance to give the hard worker artillery instead of attacking with her vast army . Some of the hard worker think retiring failed uprising — but give them enough undecomposed brand , and they ’ll still fight .
So of course , having helped the slaves to free themselves , Daenerys leaves it up to the former slaves to settle what to do with their masters . Right ? Of course she does . Because Daenerys is n’t about trying to impose her own will on anybody , she ’s just about authorize masses to … oh , wait .

No , actually , Daenerys gets pumped up on the crowd shouting “ Mhysa ! Mhysa ! ” and adjudicate that , as Ser Barristan Selmy says , she ’s the “ swayer ” of this metropolis now . And she gets to take between show mercifulness to the former slave - owners and manage out jurist for the 163 children the masters nailed up as a message to her a while back — because it ’s all about her , of track . She opt “ justice , ” and a gross ton of slavers get Spartacus - ed .
That ’s another thread turn tail through the episode , of course — people claiming they ’re acting in the drive of DoJ . Daenerys consecrate an atrociousness in the name of justice , and Jon Snow top men to Craster ’s Keep to get justice for Jeor Mormont . Brienne rides off to do DoJ to Cat Stark ’s retentiveness . But there ’s no justice for Tyrion — because really , all of these hoi polloi are only interested in “ justness ” for those who are already dead , and justice is just a elbow room of settling scores and keeping the steering wheel turn .
