Co - writer Roberto Orci has officially ruled out some potential villains — and , by extension , the identity of Sherlock star topology Benedict Cumberbatch ’s part — for J.J. Abrams ’s continuation . Neither Cumberbatch nor anyone else is playingthe mechanical man Ruk , marooned human Charlie Evans , orascended godlike being Gary Mitchell . Of these , only Gary Mitchell was even mistily considered a serious possibility for the movie ’s villain .
