The Daleks areDoctor Who ’s most persistent foe , and for many the ultimate test of just how a new thespian slips into the role is how they handle going up againstthe legendary pepperpots . But Ncuti Gatwa might not get that test for a tenacious while , if refund showrunner Russell T. Davies has his way .
“ I do think we ’ve had a plenty of Daleks lately , ” Davies said to British tabloidthe Mirrorat a recent press event for theupcoming anniversary specials . “ I call back they ’ve been done a hatful — people are expect them every year now . So I think they need a undecomposed pause . Hopefully , there ’s some enemies that will become new classic , but it ’s always good to move on . ”
While most Doctors have face the Daleks at least a couple of times , they ’ve become much more of a regularity in advanced Doctor Who — especially lately , as Davies noted , referring to the fact that almost every one of Jodie Whittaker’sspecials across New Yearsand her last outings need the Daleks . As practiced as they are , and as iconic , the potency of overplaying them is very much real .

That said , that “ unspoilt pause ” might not be all that farsighted in the rarefied scheme of things — we’ve alreadyknown for a while , for example , that the current Dr. Who production designers are work on a Dalek redesign , potentially the first significant redevelopment to the creatures ’ aesthetic since 2005 ( outside of thecontroversial 2011 Dalek Paradigm aim , which did n’t really stick around ) . If , theoretically speaking , Gatwa ’s Doctor faced the Daleks either at the climax of his debut series next year , or even in the2024 Christmas special , that would still be two long time between their paying back and theDaleks ’ last appearancein “ The Power of the Doctor . ”
Two class , even if there was admittedly not a lot of Dr. Who on TV in that time , is still a decent pause if that ’s all there end up being — but fan should be prepared that it might be even longer than that before the Daleks exterminate again .
