With Dune : Part Twoabout to strike dramatic art , it ’s easy to forget a timewhen that was n’t a certainty . In choosing to make only one-half of the story , there was a trenchant opening during the making and lead - up to Dune : Part One that Part Two would never happen . The whole affair was a gamble . A gamble that , in talking to citizenry involved , was much risky on the exterior looking in . late , io9 sat down with the director of both films , Denis Villeneuve , and a few of his virtuoso to talk over their linear perspective on the position .
“ The view [ of Dune Part Two never happening ] occurred to me as I was germinate Part One , when I was in the desert , ” Villeneuve told io9 . “ I think read to myself , ‘ Enjoy the instant , because you might not come back here with these characters . ’ It was part of the gambling I was doing [ with the adaptation ] . But I knew once the motion-picture show was finish that Legendary was absolutely proud of and happy with the movie . And , I got the assurance very quickly , in fact , that , there would be a Part Two no matter what happened . But let ’s say that as I was shoot , I was remembering that I had to be at pacification that that could be it . ”

Dune : Part One opened , both in theater and cyclosis on Max ( then HBO Max ) on October 21 , 2021 . The prescribed news of Part Twocame a mere five day later , after a successful $ 41 million initiative weekend . So while the world was exit in the dark , people behind the picture had a substantial inkling .
“ I only pick up rumblings that there might not be a 2nd film , ” hotshot Dave Bautista , who plays Glossu Rabban , tell io9 . “ We never had that prescribed conversation with Denis . I think he always had confidence that there would be . I think he ’s , a soul who has a imaginativeness and he does n’t range from that vision . I think his vision was never one film , so I recollect he never give up that . So we never had the conversation . ”
“ And I also was pretty confident because I see the first picture show and I was like , ‘ It ’s awing , ’ ” he continue . “ It ’s not only beautiful storytelling , but it just really cuts off and it leaves you hanging . And I did n’t see a humanity where people would n’t need to have closure on that . So I never I never turn a loss faith at all . ”

Stellan Skarsgård , who plays Rabban ’s evil , powerful uncle Baron Harkonnen , had a similar point of view . “ I do n’t think I had [ Part Two not happening ] in my intellect because , I love [ Denis ] is a fantastic filmmaker , ” Skarsgård told io9 . “ He has loved this project very long . He ’s carried it since his childhood . So [ I love ] the first one would be good . ”
Which it was , Part Two was announced , and now it ’s hit theaters March 1 . But for a few minutes , out there in the desert , there was that gleam that it would n’t happen . Thankfully , it did .
