There ’s an unsteady , helter-skelter energy coursing through much ofSimon Kinberg ’s Dark Phoenix . It almost feels like an extension of the experiential crisis its titulary hero sandwich finds herself in as she becomes the most sinewy variation to ever take the air the Earth . That feeling , agree to Kinberg , was a whole intentional part of his directorial debut .
When I spoke with Kinberg over the earpiece recently , he opened up about how his personal love ofthe Dark Phoenix Sagais what made him desire to apply the comics taradiddle for the final chapter of Fox ’s ten - franchise . But there ’s a distinctly grounded lineament to Dark Phoenix that makes it experience unlike any other telling of the classic saga , and Kinberg ’s abstract thought for list into this version of the go - Men is nothing if not fascinating to ponder over .
io9 : The Dark Phoenix Saga ’s such an talkative , complicated story in Marvel ’s strip . utter to me about your originative outgrowth and how you boiled down what elements of the classic stories you desire to mold your celluloid .

Simon Kinberg : I was talk to [ wonder writer]Chris Claremontabout this last night after he ’d seen the film . The Dark Phoenix Saga ’s such a massive , complicated sprawl epic thing , but I really wanted to make this story about Jean . I wanted to do a Jean story that could go as vertically into her character as possible in footing of her experience of what ’s happening to her psychologically and emotionally . I desire to deconstruct the deficiency of control that ’s always been a part of the Phoenix story and seek to figure out what that means for Jean . What does it mean to be the most powerful animate being in the integral galaxy and finger like you ’re losing yourself ?
io9 : When you talk about that verticality to your approach to the film , what do you intend ?
Kinberg : I conceive that what happens with a lot of ensemble movie is that the story run more horizontal . You tell as many different character level as you could , work in as many unlike plot of ground lines as you could , and you do n’t really have the time for quiet , pensive moment or longer drama scene with your protagonists . I wanted to give Jean ’s story the amount of screen clock time it needed to really breathe so as to be the most impactful .

io9 : Who is this rendering of Jean Grey ? What defines her , and how does she see herself ?
Kinberg : Well , what I ’ve always bang about Jean in the comics , and have tried to bring to this incarnation of her , is that she ’s a person who ’s benevolent and loving and loyal , but also troubled . She ’s uneasy and uncomfortable of her own power because part of it scares her . She needs to be in control , and so she guard nasty — maybe a little too tight — to attempt to make indisputable she ’s maintaining that handgrip . That control of herself . That ’s a operose way to go through life , and it ’s not a fully unquestionable way to move through life-time .

io9 : Was that to give audiences a direction to see themselves in Jean ?
Kinberg : Well , so many of us are like that . There ’s something about our inside psyche where our demons and secrets experience that we do n’t needs want to partake in with even our loved ones . We live slightly spurious versions of ourselves , and you see so much of that in Jean . The affair that I ’ve always loved about the Dark Phoenix story is that it hale Jean and the people around her to confront some of those percentage of herself that she was repressing . Just as a dramatic approximation , that ’s so resonant but also relevant give the path our bon ton demands more of char than from valet de chambre .
io9 : There are a couple of moments in the movie that sense like deliberate pieces of comment about how the X - valet have been treated . Was there a big melodic theme you were nonplus at by addressing that in Dark Phoenix ?

Kinberg : I think women are meant to repress more . It ’s increasingly less true , but traditionally , you think about the repression of certain emotion , sexuality , and Jean ’s been a stand in for that idea in a spate of ways . She ’s the most knock-down of the X - man , but she ’s always been pushed to the side .
io9 : let the cat out of the bag to me about stepping into the theater director ’s purpose for the first time . What was your vision for Dark Phoenix , and what were the directorial influence you approached the floor with ?
Kinberg : Obviously there are the supernatural , fantastical elements from the source material and it was important to me that we included the cosmic intergalactic storyline from the comic because we had n’t seen any of that in tenner - Men films yet . The superhero movies that were most inspiring to me were like Logan and Christopher Nolan ’s Dark Knight Trilogy .

io9 : Batman ? How so ?
Kinberg : Ironically , the first half of Batman Begins is my pet clod of the Dark Knight movies . Obviously , they ’re all masterpiece , but the first half of Batman Begins before he becomes Batman , I just found so relatable because he ’s just a cat . He does n’t have his courting or an alter ego . He ’s not off fighting crime . I approached Dark Phoenix with those film in mind , and wanted to emphasize the reference drama . The movie postulate to be more natural and intimate and personal than we ’d done with the franchise before .
io9 : How did you want that rawness to interpret on screen ?

Kinberg : There were a few key things . evidently , the performance . I spent significantly more time rehearsing with the actors , and I really emphasized that they require not to treat this like your typical superhero movie . Keep that human drama in mind . That sounds like I ’m denigrating the superhero moving picture genre , but I ’m not . I bed these movies . But I think there ’s a sure elbow room that actors sometimes execute in these pic , especially in some of the old 10 - Men movies , where things can come across either a routine too formal or too larger than life history .
io9 : It ’s interesting you say that because you ’d cerebrate that the Dark Phoenix Saga of all place is where you ’d need that kind of melodramatic energy . But the motion picture ’s so grounded , and it sometimes feels like the great - than - life story things that are still there are creating tension with the step . Was that knowing ?
Kinberg : In a way , yeah . Dark Phoenix needed to feel true to life history , so we needed to bring it down to Earth . A fate of that is in the cinematography . I think there ’d been two or three time previously when we used hand-held camera in ten - Men movies , and everything was very pay off . thing were on dolly path and cranes , you know . I retrieve there are only a pair of shots in this motion-picture show that are n’t hand-held .

I wanted the large activity sequences whenever possible to be real , meaning achieve through in - television camera proficiency and not with a calculator . So , there are two big sequences that come to mind . There ’s a struggle in the movie between Jean and Magneto over a whirlybird that ’s flee in the air . The chopper ’s swing back and forward between the two of them , and you ’ve pay off soldiers running onto the chopper trying to weigh it down . normally , that sort of affair would have been done using mostly VFX .
io9 : The scene emphatically feel like a physical game of towboat of warfare .
Kinberg : When the audience is await at it , there ’s this part of your brain that can recognise when the cathartic of something like a chopper beckon around abnormally in the air are off or not . But the practical effect team really ill-treat up to give that prospect a physicality that matched Michael [ Fassbender ] and Sophie ’s [ Turner ] energy and the overall effect brought a realism to the battle that palpate right .

io9 : Let ’s go back to the tension between the movie ’s cosmic and grounded element . Say more about how you went about balancing those two things .
Kinberg : By far and away , creating a tone that could prolong both of those vigour and be cohesive was hard . But the answer to why is actually really simple . I grew up learn these comics , and the Dark Phoenix Saga was my favorite plot line in the comics , and the cosmic is such a important part of the original report .
There were so many other parts of the cartoon strip that we excised from the movie , like the Hellfire Club and Charles Xavier ’s romance with Lilandra , that it felt wrong to fully ignore all of the cosmic element . If we observe things exclusively on Earth and whole ground , as bluff a selection as that would have been and as leisurely as it would have been to commit off from a visual effect and tonal standpoints , it would have cut back out something that I , as a fan , would have felt let down by .

io9 : There ’s that moment at the last of Revelation of Saint John the Divine when Jean shoot down En Sabah Nur and he seems to understand that she ’s on the verge of becoming Phoenix - life . Was there ever a version of Dark Phoenix that build on Apocalypse ’s foreshadowing as a way to keep the storey more run aground ?
Kinberg : Not really . That Dark Phoenix foreshadowing was worrying to me because Jean ’s power … is otherworldly . It ’s the Phoenix Force . It ’s not just something deep down of Jean . Jean discovering her own innate power and own it amplified by something in a more visually interesting manner was a great idea for Apocalypse because Jean ’s finally letting go , but then the notion of her becoming the variety of Phoenix Force that we eff did n’t on the button make sentiency .

io9 : Some of the form has been pretty open about the identification number of variety that the pic go bad through during output to avoid overlapping with another comics movie .
Kinberg : [ Chuckling ] Yeah , they have .
io9 : Level with me . Was it Captain Marvel ? Werethe major reshootsdue to a mandatory that came down from Fox and Marvel because of the acquisition , or were they just because you wanted Dark Phoenix to palpate distinct ?

Kinberg : The truth is , I think a lot of the cast understand Captain Marvel , and then hold out off to do interviews , and sort of put two and two together . But the conclusion to reshoot what we reshot happened before Captain Marvel come out , and you know , I do n’t have approach to Marvel Studios ’ planning physical process . Having say that , our original termination that I ’d storyboarded did have things in common with the very end of Captain Marvel .
io9 : You mean the final conflict remove billet in distance ?
Kinberg : Yeah . But other than the mount , ourending was quite different . The reason I wanted to go back to reshoot things , though , was because this was meant to be the culmination of this family unit that ’s raise together over however many flick , but it ’s also a movie that tears that family apart . They ’re facing a more serious hurt than they ’ve ever see before . The end of the movie really would have been more about the class between Charles and Scott with the rest of the cristal - Men . But one by one , the other X - Men side with Charles , and by the destruction , it ’s just Scott by himself .

But in watching it myself and watch it with audiences during test screenings , the smell was : if you ’re going to put this menage through all of these things , you ’re give way to need to see them unite at the end . We never finished shooting that ending , but no matter how far along I got with it , it always feel like it was lacking closure and unity . That was really the drift for the changes .
io9 : One last question , since you brought up Nolan ’s Batman films . Was the final setting in Dark Phoenix at the cafe mean to be a nod to The Dark Knight Rises ?
Kinberg : Yes ! It is .

This post has been update as an earlier version mistakenly cut off our final inquiry to Kinberg . It has now been added .
