Composer Bear McCreary ’s melodious endowment were called upon in the last sequence of Battlestar Galactica , not just to occupy BSG with the lovely voice of chanting ladies and metal drum , but to make a special ballad . McCreary ’s web log reveals the signification and creation behind ‘ Gaeta ’s Lament . ’ Spoilers from the episode and song video after the startle .
To grapple with the pain after his leg was amputated Gaeta cry out a lonesome Sung . McCreary explained that the lyrics in this sad melody helped to weave together several tarradiddle arcs in the installment “ Guess What ’s come To Dinner . ”
The role player who plays Gaeta , Alessandro Juliana , graduate with a B.M. in vocal / opera performance at McGill University in Montreal . The writer and producers decided to use his experience in the episode , “ hazard , ” and create “ Gaeta ’s Lament , ” which Juliana calls , “ The Stump Serenade . ” The episode ’s writer , Michael Angeli , penned the lyrics and talks about what he want to do with the medicine inspired by the his married woman ’s pianoforte melodic phrase .

He [ Producer Ron D. Moore ] wanted it to be sad , about a lose lover . In a good sense we were creating a back - story through the song . And ‘ opera ’ was credibly the wrong word . He want more of a lay , with a minor key feel to it . So I save the lyrics with the lost fan in thinker . But knowing how the show would terminate – with The Hybrid wakening – I require the words to bear on to that second as well . I also felt up that the “ story ” in the song should be an emblem for the cold reality of Gaeta losing his pegleg and there ’s nothing that can be done about it .
McCreary took the ballad lick with Juliana to make it the beautifully distressing birdsong it is now . He even used a little divine guidance from reach old piece of work on Gaeta ’s original melody .
To produce the melody for the Lament , I started with a melody conceived for Gaeta in Season 1 , an idea that in the end never developed fully . However , in this context , it match utterly … .Many of my melodies on Galactica are extremely reliant on their underlying concordance to have substance ( Baltar ’s idea is a extreme representative : without the interesting chordal onward motion , the melodic phrase itself is quite inane ) .

Interestingly when Gaeta sings , it is n’t the first time we hear the Lament . It played without lyrics in last weeks episode , and as Gaeta kick the bucket under Doc Cottle ’s off-white saw . The song really flows throughout the intact episode crescendo with the lyrics ‘ To have her , please , just one day backwash , ’ which land on the wakening of the Hybrid and the surprise jumping .
McCreary shed a little dirt and promise this wo n’t be the last we see of euphony being brought to the front of the series . He is even supervise on - set instrumental performances . Oh , methinks it ’s time for another barn terpsichore on BSG .
hapless Gatea he ’s everybody ’s squawk in BSG . First he took crap from Baltar , then he was almost throw away out the airlock , now his stage has been sawed off by Doc Cottle . Call this a shot in the wickedness , but if cylons have the ability to create mechanically skillful hoi polloi , could n’t they make a mechanical leg for our pal Gaeta ? take Gaeta a love interest stat , he ’s so sad it makes me call out .
