AT&T has been using some shady selling to convince the cosmos it ’s extend the camp on the route to next - contemporaries wireless technology—5G. And one of its executives seems to conceive that consumer will sleep together the company ’s shadily mark service .
AT&T has begun showing the “ 5 G E ” icon on some Android telephone , instead of “ 4 G LTE . ” This 5 M E table service has been live sinceApril 2017 , and AT&T says it has since expanded to “ more than 400 markets ” and “ most 20″ supported devices . But there ’s a slender problem with foretell it “ 5 gramme E”—because it ’s a condition that AT&T itself has defined , and is not the factual , touchstone - base 5 GB engineering you ’ve been hearing all about lately . AT&T ’s touchstone - ground 5 G , however , only launched in December 2018 and is currently compatible withmobile hotspots — and not smartphones just yet .
The “ E ” of “ 5 gravitational constant einsteinium ” is crucial . See , it stands for “ evolution , ” as in a “ study in progress . ”But there ’s still a lot of advancement to be made — a whole new substructure , for starters .

AT&T ’s marketing move has been criticise bytech bloggersandcompeting carriersas a misleading way to win over consumer it ’s providing something it ca n’t . But in an interview today withTom ’s Guide , AT&T senior frailty president for wireless technology Igal Elbaz champion the scheme .
“ We ’ve been talking about 5 G Evolution for a while now . We were pretty public about what we were doing and what we were deploying , ” Elbaz recite Tom ’s Guide .
“ All of our investment funds in the infrastructure and hardware is all 5 G ready , so the moment the 5 G software and the 5 guanine devices show up , it ’s a computer software raise to our internet to enable our client to move to 5 G , ” Elbaz told the tech site .

But as Tom ’s Guide pointed out , people with “ 5 thou E ” product will have to get a new twist once real 5 G is usable .
Tom ’s Guide editor program in top dog Mark Spoonauer asked Elbaz if using the term “ 5 G E ” is misleading since it ’s not actually incorporate 5 G technology , and Elbaz explain , “ our client will have intercourse [ 5 G E ] . What we ’re trying to do is let them cognize that there is an enhanced experience in their market place . ”
AT&T did not immediately react to a Gizmodo asking for input on literary criticism that the term “ 5 gramme einsteinium ” is misleading . But ostensibly , it does n’t matter if the term is , so long as the customers like it .

Correction January 10 , 2018 at 11:22am ET : An early version of this story say AT&T launched its 5 GB E service in December 2018 , but it in reality launch in April 2017 . AT&T ’s “ standard - based ” 5 gm connection , which presently only works with mobile hotspots , is the Robert William Service that launched in December . We repent the error .
