Nope , it ’s not a home - brewing experiment gone horribly awry in the ISS . It ’s an attempt to quiz the resiliency of kombucha , by throwing it directly against the emptiness of space .
The samples werefirst sent up the ESA last yr , after the space organization note the hardiness of kombucha and decided to transmit it up to see how it did . ESA has long done a serial of space biology experiments to see how various sprightliness forms ( like tardigrade ) outlive when essentially throw away out of the ISS window . They ’ve even had some fortune withseeds managing to survive . For the kombucha experimentation , though , the programme is to give it a full 18 months in quad and see if it forms a hardy enough biofilm to get through it , which researchers say , they expect it to .
There ’s no word on how its visit into place might change its flavor , but give the fact that office of blank are said to have araspberries - and - rum tinged flavour , I offer as human trial subjugate # 1 . ( Call me , ESA ! )
