Star Wars fan are still getting their head around the game - changing choices Rian Johnson made for the enfranchisement in The Last Jedi . However , it seems like George Lucas would ’ve made similarly monumental decisions if he ’d made the sequel trilogy . He just would ’ve waited a bit longer .
In a young interview withIGN , Star Wars star Mark Hamill divulge he spoke to George Lucas about his intent for Luke Skywalker after Return of the Jedi and it was part interchangeable to Johnson ’s . “ I happen to know that George did n’t kill Luke until the end of [ sequence ] nine , after he trained Leia , ” Hamill said . “ Which is another thread that was never diddle upon [ in The Last Jedi ] . ”
Johnson , of class , also stamp out Luke , but did it in Episode VIII , not IX , and Leia was never trained as a Jedi . We did , however , see her use the Force to pull through her own aliveness in the film .

It sounds like Lucas ’ idea was interchangeable to what occurred in the Expanded Universe , with Luke breeding Leia to be Jedi and carrying those nonsuch into the future . So the interrogative is , when did Lucas tell Hamill this ? Was it a few years ago , when he divulge to the actor that there would be more Star war moving-picture show ? Or was it decades before , when Lucas had the grand idea for 12 picture ? The worker does n’t say .
Hamill also wo n’t say if he ’s in the literal Episode IX , which is being co - write and directed by J.J. Abrams . “ No one ’s really talked to me about it , ” he enjoin . But if he is , interview are n’t likely to find out until that film opens on December 20 , 2019 .
