We sat with writer Orci and Kurtzman at the Paramount Star Trek DVD junket eagerly look details on the next Trek . Right off they cleared up late rumors that they ’ve already create a storyline for the 2d outing — they have yet to sit down and engage themselves in a hotel room as they did the first sentence around . As fans of the series in all its incarnations , they have yet to settle even on who just they need to let in , say Kurtzman , let alone whether to harness weightier world payoff .
But what about the rumour Gitmo plot strain ? Orci stated that the reports that they ’re writing a comment on torture and the Bush ism ( while never entirely out of the question ) are a small derisory , since they ’ve barely begin workplace on the sequel .
We have nothing . The torture thing was just a ‘ for instance . ’ Someone order , ‘ mod day upshot ? ’ And we said , ‘ Yeah , certain , modern 24-hour interval issues . ’
We ’re not doing a story about Gitmo . I read on some site that it was going to be about Guantanamo Bay . But now that we ’ve established the characters , we can have a more philosophic allegory , where what ’s happening in the future represents our world — like the best rendering of it in the ’ 60s did with women ’s right , racial equality , [ and ] progressive return .
We ’re still just brainstorm internally , and we ’re going to get together soon and bust our riffs out and see where it strike us .
Also , we ’d like to mark there was a fleck a torture in the first already . So should they revisit this , allow ’s trust they break newfangled ground with it .
In a separate interview , theatre director J.J. Abrams agreed with his writers ’ observe , saying that it ’s never as simple as making a political financial statement .
“ It ’s not like we ’re looking to make the second picture some kind of expectant political allegory – I think it ’s significant that there is metaphor to what we know , and that there is relevance . And I mean that allegory is the thing that made shows like The Twilight Zone and Star Trek resonate and still full of life today . ”
He continued on , excuse that where the first film was all introduction — to the humans , to the fictitious character , to the time full point — the 2d has a duty to go deeper and canvas this new globe and farm with it .
