The ESA ’s SWARM trio of satellites are up - and - running game . Here ’s a seraphic animation put together using its first readiness of eminent - resolution CAT scan showing the most late changes in the magnetic battlefield that protect our planet .
This timelapse shows changes from January to June 2014 . Our magnetic battlefield is in a lasting state of fluxion ; charismatic north crawl around and the polarity turn over every few hundred thousand years or so . What ’s more , the strength of the magnetic field is invariably commute — and it ’s currently showing signs of weakening .

The magnetic field , which protects us from cosmic radiation and charged speck , is particularly unaccented over the South Atlantic Ocean , which is known as the South Atlantic Anomaly . And in fact , this weak area has indirectly caused some irregular planet “ hiccups ” called Single Event upset .
