Candles are humble tech by definition . We ’ve been using them for thousands of years . But designerZelf Koelmanput a more forward-looking twirl on them by whip upan machine - lighting candle rigthat even has a dimmer switch . It ’s as neat as it is completely idiotic .
As a hardheaded gadget , it ’s both ridiculously over - organise and tiptop low - tech at the same time . But as a weird conversation piece and experiment in lighting , it ’s pretty damn cool nonetheless . For a gimmick that does something as bare as lighting candles , it ’s impressively complex , like a adept Rube Goldberg motorcar . Koelman , a student of the Industrial Design program at Eindhoven University of Technology , explains the inside working of his gadgetthis way :
taper are lit and extinguished in random . The lamp will mechanically wake young candles if the candles scat out of wax and if they are available . The lamp see if it needs to ignite a new wax light by value the weight of each candle . In grammatical case the lamp runs out of full candle it will sense when the user puts a new candela in one of its sockets , and will directly ignite the new candles to the amount set by the knob .

It ’s notthe most insanely flamboyant pieceof taper technical school we ’ve ever seen , but as a contender formost useless machine(but with fire ) , it ’s a fun small experiment . Candles that do n’t fire up themselves will never reckon quite the same . [ Core77 ]
