As we eagerly awaittoday ’s WWDC let on , it ’s fun to recollect that for every hit there ’s a handful of more or less more questionable theme that just never quite clicked . Here are the seven of eldritch Apple gismo that just were n’t good enough to make it to the finish line .

The Macintosh Surface
This prototype ( evidently ) was n’t called the “ Surface ” but or else , “ Bashful . ” An early paradigm of the Newton , which did eventually make it to market , Bashful would have come with a keyboard and stylus if it ever made off the draught board .

A Dual Screen Workstation
Like the blate , this dual - CRT screen setup was another idea being sound off around in the former 80s . Also like the Bashful , it was designed by Hartmut Esslinger , father of Frogdesign .
An Octagon iPhone
One of the many prototypes unearthed during Apple and Samsung ’s epic patent of invention run-in , this octangular iPhone could have been the shape of earphone - to - issue forth until Apple opted for that oft - imitated “ rectangle with rounded corner . ”
The MacPhone
Pre - pointer to both the iPhone and the iPad , the Apple Snow White 1 Tablet Mac and the Apple Snow White 3 Macphone ( left and right ) , were in development in ’ 82 and ’ 84 . But or else of crusade the unearthly tablet - phones out to market , Apple turned to the Macintosh , and waited a few decade before coming back .
An Angular iPhone 4
Another gem from the Apple vs Samsung cause , this prototype is was labled N90 , so chances are it ’s an iPhone 4 that never was .
A Wrist Computer
An Apple spotter is n’t a new idea ; the Time Band dates back to 1991 , when it was published in the Nipponese magazine Axis . The mental image was published as a mere construct that then - CEO John Sculley was touting , so chances are the abomination was never in reality prototyped .

A Crazy Vertical Monitor
Another Esslinger stick , this setup was gentle “ concept 2 ” and was intended to make up americana , draw inspiration from things like Studebaker to the Coke feeding bottle . But perhaps most striking is its wildly erect screen .
